Miss Sudie has a new quilt!

As a child growing up I loved playing with dolls, paper dolls and my doll house--- ( made out of card board created by me) you can imagine what it looked like! We didn't have glue guns, Elmer's glue or scotch tape in those days. I probably used cement glue and worked for hours trying to hold it together! It certainly wasn't precise--- but the little dollies inside didn't mind at all!

I still have 2 of the celluloid dolls from the 50's. I would make little dresses for them, out of scraps of fabric and then store them in pretend dresser  which were my grandmother's small empty pill boxes!

Today--- I still play with the dolls in a more "grown-up" way by making primitive and prairie dolls, then arranging them on a doll quilt which I made  for their doll bed.  I love to create vignettes---- as if the dolls would be playing among themselves or having a tea party! I have them displayed inside a pie safe cabinet in my sewing room.

I finished the nine patch quilt yesterday! I used one of Jo Morton's patterns entitled  "Cynthia's Quilt"--- from Jo's 19th Century quilt series published in 1998. I'm pleased with the results and have it sandwiched for hand quiltiing. I think "Miss Sudie" will be pleased, don't you?

                                                                       Meet Miss "Sudie"
                                                          Miss Sudie's new quilt!

Collection of celluloid dolls-- the two on the left side are one's from my childhood.

The doll's in the little red wagon  and the one outside the wagon are prairie dolls that I have made.

Hope you are having a great day. Hugs from the doll gang!

  1. Miss Sudie has to be one very happy little doll with such a sweet new quilt.

Thanks for sharing your dolls. We're never too old to play, whether just admiring them or arranging them or using them as incentive to make more little quilts. Yes, we're never too old.

  8. I love the little nine patch, the colors are wonderful! I have always loved dolls, too. In high school I still had one little doll, about 4" tall that I made clothes for. I don't think we ever outgrow dolls. Yours are all great!

  16. What a pretty vignette! You have reminded me of the flour and water paste I used to make, but I never pasted together cardboard pieces. I also made very simple dresses for dolls. I would fold a piece of fabric into a square, cut a corner for the neck opening and after placing it onto the doll, tie a string around the waist. So clever, yes? NOT! But it worked for me as I was totally sure that I was doing exactly the right thing.

  18. What a fun bunch of darling dollies! And the quilt is so sweet. Your little dolls from your childhood remind me of the ones my daughter and her little buddy used to sew for. They got them at the dime store and could pop their heads on and off to put the clothes on. I, too, had cardboard box dollhouses - with pictures of windows from the catalog, etc. I sometimes think making do is what has made some of us creative. Lovely post, Carolyn! Carol

  24. I have just found your wonderful blog! I am also a hand quilter of doll quilts and make cloth dolls now and then. I love to place them in vignettes also, with their beds, quilts, even a Christmas tree, and have written stories to go with them. I've read through your posts and look forward to reading and learning more.
